FEROX interviews Levi Farrand, Deep Forestry
What is the main role of Deep Forestry in FEROX?
We provide access to autonomous drone systems that fly below the canopy of forests. These systems are being adapted for use in Berry surveying automation. We also have expertise in all forms of robotics and AI systems this is valuable to help the FEROX consortium to build and incorporate fleet management systems that we hope will one day enable large-scale forest scanning with various types of autonomous robotic systems.
How does your drone technology contribute to the overarching goals of FEROX?
We are one of the few drone company globally that has an operational product on the market that flies into dense forests, self-piloting in-between the trees. This is a unique selling point that opens the door to the mapping of berries in dense forest environments, a quintessential part of the FEROX project.
How are FEROX drone solutions going to be a game-changer for berry pickers?
We envision a world where an individual surveyor scans large swaths of forests before the berry season. The drones will be the principal system to discover where the berries are and to indicate hot-spots where maximum daily yield can be achieved. By maximizing the time spent in the forest we aim to provide the berry pickers with significantly more income as well as a safe and more fulfilling fieldwork experience.
